History

Below is a list of the development history for NextStorm technology, beginning with the initial formation of the GOES satellite-based 0-1 hour convective storm initiation algorithm in mid-2002. Since then, numerous contracts and grants have been awarded NextStorm developer John Mecikalski, which have lead to the portfolio of algorithms presently available. Significant events within the development history are highlighted.

  • November 2001 – Proof of concept development of 0-1 hour Convective Initiation algorithm
  • Recipient of 2003 NASA New Investigator Program (NIP) Award for algorithm development
  • June 2004: Program manager and leader of Advanced Satellite Aviation Weather Products (ASAP) initiative, as directed by NASA
